Air Source Heat Pump Market Transformation Workshop
Heat Pumps, Smart Controls, VRFs, Oh my!
Join NEEP in exploring how the region can work collaboratively to accelerate the adoption of air source heat pumps (ASHP) and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems. These renewable heating and cooling technologies are increasingly seen as important solutions to a low-carbon future in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region and beyond and will transform the way we heat and cool our homes and businesses.
This event will convene a diverse group of key stakeholders from across the ASHP/VRF markets, including manufacturers, program administrators, installers, technology experts, state/local policy makers, and others to coordinate effective implementation of regional market transformation strategies. Market transformation strategy reports for ASHP and VRF, developed through NEEP’s ASHP and Smart Controls Initiative, will provide frameworks of key strategies for stakeholders to discuss, explore, and debate.
- Explore the role of ASHP/VRF technologies in the context of current policy environment
- Coordinate effective implementation of market transformation strategies for air source heat pump (ASHP) and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems
- Share best practices, lessons learned, and success stories related to promotion of ASHP and VRF systems
- Explore best practices related to quality assurance efforts for ASHP and VRF installations
DAY 1: ASHP FOCUS
Tuesday June 18, 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION
Setting The Stage
A high level look at the state of the regional ASHP market will set the stage for the workshop. Where do we stand with market adoption? What is the broader policy context within which the market is now operating? How effective has the region been in implementing regional market transformation strategies?
THE ASHP CONSUMER: MESSAGING AND RESOURCES THAT WORK
This panel will explore the elements of successful consumer education and marketing efforts that have led to increased adoption of and satisfaction with ASHPs. What might a regional campaign include?
|11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.||
developing the right measuring stick: the future of product specifications
This session will showcase the latest thinking around evolving ASHP performance specifications and test procedures to ensure we're recognizing and incentivizing the highest quality systems that both perform in the field and provide the highest levels of customer satisfaction.
bringing high quality design and installation to the masses
High-quality installations of ASHP systems generate referrals, increase sales, reduce callbacks, and improve customer comfort and satisfaction. Design practices also have a major impact on efficiency and performance of an ASHP system. What are best practices associated with sizing, selecting, installing, and consumer operations and maintenance? How are these best practices evolving to help ensure efficient air source heat pumps and happy customers in cold climates?
integrated controls: when strangers become friends
Once a consumer has a heat pump, how can we ensure they are getting the most benefit from its use? Heat pumps coupled with smart and integrated controls are entering the market and popping up in programs. This session will look at the state of this space and provide guidance and examples for the rest of the region.
NEW FRONTIERS: POTENTIAL AREAS OF OPPORTUNITY
This panel will present a variety of short presentations on emerging areas of opportunity for the ASHP market.

DAY 2: CROSS-CUTTING AND VRF FOCUS
Wednesday June 19, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
REGIONAL ASHP PANEL: WHAT CAN WE ACCOMPLISH TOGETHER?
ASHPs are not just a thing in the Northeast. Other regions of the U.S. and Canada are also actively looking to ASHPs to provide solutions for energy reduction, carbon reduction, and more. What makes these regions similar? What makes our region unique? How can we most effectively work together to drive accelerated, yet sustainable, adoption of ASHPs for the broader North American market?

VRF SESSION: NEEP’S NEW VRF MARKET TRANSFORMATION STRATEGIES REPORT
NEEP and VEIC will present the key strategies included in a soon-to-be completed regional market transformation strategy report. This presentation will lay out the key areas for the regional stakeholders to prioritize market development activity.
VRF SESSION: PRIORITIZING REGIONALLY COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITIES
Following the previous session, this panel will discuss which strategies are of highest importance to regionally move forward in 2020.
